La vegetazione del litorale di Manfria, presso Gela (Sicilia), area soggetta a vincolo archeologico.

2000

The results of a phytosociological investigation about a coastal area of S. Sicily, close to Gela, are presented. The coexistence of several lithological substrata, as well as the particular climatic conditions of this area, gives rise to a noteworthy floristic and vegetational biodiversity. As matter of fact, a set of N. African species are here localized, taking part to peculiar vegetation types, sometimes exclusive of this sicilian coast-stretch. The observed plant communities are represented by psammophilous associations of Cakiletea maritimae, Ammophiletea and Malcolmietalia, salt-marsh vegetation of Sarcocornietea and Phragmito-Magnocericetea, halophilous rupicolous shrublands of Crit…

PRIMO LEVI E LA QUESTIONE DELL’ANIMALITÀ

2020

The approach of man and animal in Levi’s work can lead to some simplifications. We could think of a naturalization operation: man is one of many animals. Or, on the contrary, we could think of a culturalization: the animal is a social being. In reality, the ontological principle on which Levi’s thinking and writing are based is that of analogy. Assuming the hypothesis of the anthropologist Philippe Descola, this essay proposes an analogical reading of Levi. Focusing on a precise story, Censura in Bitinia, I will try to discuss this interpretative hypothesis.

Willem Boshoff, artist's monograph and catalogue

2013

Willem Boshoff’s work articulates around a pivotal date, April 1994, the first democratic elections in South Africa. He may choose to work gigantic rocks of granite or establish vast installations of accumulated material. The artist claims that his work is based on language, often taking the form of Dictionaries. While reviewing the main questions by artists of the twentieth century, texts or artworks from Europe are systematically tested against their South African counterpart. Boshoff’s attitude is determined by a melancholic questioning of his role as a creator linked to a political situation and cultural milieu. He discovers more dynamic ways of presenting gestures when his artistic act…

La Terra reinventata. Etica dell’ambiente e Antropocene

2018

Reinventing Earth. Environmental Ethics and Anthropocene This article considers two issues concerning Anthropocene – first, Anthropocene as a puzzling notion, second, the possibilty of an environmental ethics of the Anthropocene. Definitions, narratives of, and reactions to Anthropocene are presented in paragraph 2. A view of the value of hybrid nature in Anthropocene is sketched in paragraph 3.

Standardisation, Reference Materials and Comparative Measurements for Surface Area and Pore Characterisation

1991

Summary This paper reviews current activities to standardise measuring procedures for surface area and pore size determination. Comparative measurements at different laboratories using candidate reference materials revealed that surfaces of highly dispersed materials can be affected remarkably during storing and sample preparation. On account of the fractal nature of these materials, the results depend on the measuring methods. Reference materials of dispersed materials are offered by national and international standardisation administrations and by industrial distributers. The standardisation of measuring methods becomes more and more international (ISO, IUPAC). The survey includes tables …

Greater mitochondrial energy production provides resistance to ocean acidification in "winning" hermatypic corals

2021

Coral communities around the world are projected to be negatively affected by ocean acidification. Not all coral species will respond in the same manner to rising CO2 levels. Evidence from naturally acidified areas such as CO2 seeps have shown that although a few species are resistant to elevated CO2, most lack sufficient resistance resulting in their decline. This has led to the simple grouping of coral species into “winners” and “losers,” but the physiological traits supporting this ecological assessment are yet to be fully understood. Here using CO2 seeps, in two biogeographically distinct regions, we investigated whether physiological traits related to energy production [mitochondrial e…

Influence of Riverine Input on Norwegian Coastal Systems

2020

Coastal ecosystems are of high ecological and socioeconomic importance and are strongly influenced by processes from land, sea, and human activities. In this study, we present physical, chemical, and biological observations over two consecutive years from three study regions along the Norwegian coast that represent a broad latitudinal gradient in catchment and oceanographic conditions (∼59–69°N): outer Oslofjord/southern Norway, Runde/western Norway, and Malangen/northern Norway. The observations included river monitoring, coastal monitoring, and sensor-equipped ships of opportunity (“FerryBox”). The riverine discharge and transports were an order of magnitude higher, and the spatiotemporal…
